Itinerary

Day 1: FARM 215 to WINDHEUWEL FARM | 3 – 4 HOURS

• A relatively short day through the fynbos mountains along the Kraaibosch dam, through Flower Valley - a large valley filled with fynbos and indigenous forests and a Unesco supported project for sustainable fynbos harvesting and education.

Day 2: WITKRANS TO STANFORD RIVER LODGE | 5 HOURS

• We will pass through Grootbos Fynbos Nature Reserve, famous as a botanical hot spot. Before we reach De Kelders (Gansbaai - a fishing village) we will head west through the coastal shrubland and traverse the vast magical almost surreal sand drifts (Grys Dunes) of Die Plaat. The mysterious landscape will give way to the beach.
• We ride through the Walker Bay Nature Reserve to the unspoilt white beaches of the Walker Bay whale sanctuary. This is arguably the best land-based area in the world to watch Southern Right Whales (whale watching capital of the world from June to December. Whales and their calves often come within metres of the coastline).
• Enjoy the long, sandy beaches and experience the thrill of beach gallops. Halfway to Hermanus, we turn into the Dunes and head for the Kleinriver and the oasis of Stanford.
• We stay at Stanford River Lodge, with time to swim and canoe.

Day 3 – BEACH RIDE TO LAGOON MOUTH | 4 HOURS

• The ride today is a circular route, where we follow the Kleinriver to the lagoon.
• Riding on the water’s edge offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and excellent birdwatching, including sightings of flamingos.
• On this shorter day, we will return to the Stanford River Lodge for lunch. You can then choose between wine tasting at Springfontein Farm, or a sunset canoe paddle on the river.
• A chance to laze on the river’s edge, eat and replenish.

Day 4 – STANFORD RIVER LODGE TO WITKRANS FARM | 6 Hours

• This is the long day of our return journey. The day follows the Klein River, then cuts through the fynbos dunes to approach the beach at Meerkom in the Walker Bay Nature Reserve, adding 4km of beach riding.
• This totals a full 35 km, leading us along the beach, through the dunes and over the mountain ranges, down into the Flower Valley, and finally to our cottage at Witkrans Farm. Highlights include galloping along the beach, stunning mountain fynbos, and ocean views.

Day 5 – WITKRANS FARM TO FARM 215

• A wonderful day filled with mountain vistas, beach canters, trailing along rock pools, and finally heading back inland to home at Farm 215.

Departure

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time to ensure a smooth check-in process and to allow enough time to prepare for the outride.

What to wear?

Long pants, such as denims or trousers, but not too tight.

No dresses, shorts, bikinis or swimwear.

Friction from bare legs and the saddle moving from the horse's natural motion leaves the rider with uncomfortable pinches down the legs.

Sturdy closed shoes or boots - no sandals or flip flops. They're great for vacations, but not for horseback riding.
Flip flops are a safety hazard while riding.

Don't forget your sunglasses, and be sure to bring sunblock in the summer!

Please bring a raincoat, jacket, or windbreaker, as the Cape weather can be unpredictable.

Please ensure that you wear appropriate clothing as stipulated. Failure to do so may result in the forfeiture of your ride at most stables.
